Wayland High School’s spring sports season opened with a concentrated series of early contests from March 24–28.
Wayland boys volleyball — one of the top teams in Division 2 — lost 3–2 in a five-set match (25-22, 23-25, 25-15, 18-25, 15-11), extending the defending Division 1 champion to a deciding set.
The match produced multiple high-end individual performances for Wayland. Finn Bell recorded 22 kills, five aces, and two blocks, while Zach O’Donnell totaled 52 assists and added six kills.
Despite the loss, the competitive five-set result against a top-tier opponent suggests the program remains positioned as a statewide contender. Wayland, which lost in the Division 2 finals last year, demonstrated the ability to match Brookline across extended rallies and force a fifth set by taking the fourth 25–18.
Wayland responded the following day with a 3–1 road win over Lexington (32-30, 25-23, 20-25, 25-19). Earlier in the week, Wayland also recorded a 3–2 scrimmage win over Chelmsford on March 24
In girls lacrosse, Wayland lost 10–9 to Westborough on March 27.
The boys lacrosse team opened its season on March 28 with a 7–2 loss at Brookline, played at Downes Field.
Looking ahead, boys lacrosse is scheduled to face Weston on March 31 and Holliston on April 4, while boys volleyball continues with a dense early schedule that includes Boston College High School, Boston Latin Academy, and St. John’s. Girls lacrosse is set to face North Andover and Weston in upcoming games.
