Wayland High School enters a dense stretch of league competition this week, with 18 games scheduled April 13-17, according to the Wayland Student Press weekly schedule.
Volleyball and baseball
The week opened on Monday with mixed results. The boys’ volleyball team defeated Boston Latin School in straight sets, 3–0, at the Wayland High School Field House, while the baseball team fell to Weston, 11–1, in an away matchup. Results for boys and girls tennis matches against Weston were not publicly posted.
Baseball enters 2026 with a markedly younger roster after graduating nine seniors from a 10–10 team that reached the state tournament last year. Head coach Chris Fay has emphasized daily improvement and player development as priorities for a group with limited varsity experience. Senior captain Albin Valdez has framed the season as an opportunity for younger players to step into leadership roles and maintain the program’s competitive standard.
Key returning contributors include junior captain Mikey Johansson, who posted a .328 batting average in 2025, and Joey Fay, who recorded a 2.07 earned run average over 27 innings pitched last season. The loss to Weston serves as an early benchmark, with additional league tests scheduled this week against Westford Academy and Medfield.
Softball
Softball is attempting a program reset following a 2–16 season in 2025. The team has retained its core roster, having lost no seniors last year, and has entered a cooperative arrangement with Weston High School to increase depth. Head coach Sarah Woodside has identified team chemistry and communication as central to the program’s improvement.
Senior captains Sophia Beckett, Kelsey Kaufmann, and Kiera Hines lead the team, with Beckett emerging as a focal point both on the field and in recruiting. Early results indicate progress, with wins over Holliston and Waltham and a one-run loss to Ashland. The team faced Westford Academy on Wednesday and Framingham on Thursday.
Boys’ volleyball
Boys’ volleyball continues to operate with championship-level expectations after consecutive appearances in the state title match. The program, led by head coach Philip George, has emphasized depth as a defining strength, with 13 returning varsity players who competed in club volleyball during the offseason.
Senior captain Finn Bell, who holds the program’s career kill record and is committed to D’Youville University in Buffalo, anchors the lineup. The team improved to 6–2 overall and 2–0 in league play with Monday’s win over Boston Latin. Upcoming matches against Newton South and Lincoln-Sudbury will test the team’s consistency and ability to perform on the road and at home.
Boys’ lacrosse
In boys’ lacrosse, early results suggest a challenging start to the season, including losses to Brookline, Weston, and Holliston. The schedule this week includes a home game against Westford Academy and an away game at Bedford, both of which represent opportunities to reset momentum.
Girls’ lacrosse
Girls’ lacrosse is undergoing a significant transition following a 9–9 season and a run to the Division 3 semifinals in 2025. The team graduated 11 seniors, including its top scorers, and is relying on a younger roster supported by offseason training programs. Senior captains Annie Melander, Mackenzie Morris, and Sofia DiCarlo lead the team under head coach Ashley Means.
Early results include a loss to Bedford, with the team seeking its first win in upcoming matchups against Westford Academy and Bedford. The Bedford game will serve as a rematch opportunity after the earlier defeat.
Tennis, track and field
Tennis and track and field are also prominent in this week’s schedule. Boys and girls tennis teams both face Weston and Westford Academy, with the girls’ team also scheduled to travel to Bromfield on Friday.
The outdoor track and field team will compete in a dual meet at Waltham on Tuesday. Senior Ryan McCormack, who has committed to compete at Boston University, represents one of the program’s top returning athletes.

Maya Lee of Wayland, a junior at Bates College, hit .462, slugged .615, and posted an on-base percentage of .500 over four games last week for the Bobcats, to be recognized as an honorable mention for Player of the Week in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. The junior also scored five runs, tripled, and stole four bases.
