Outgoing fishing derby leader says thanks

Wayland Fishing Derby 2025

To the Editor:

Less love for our great ponds.

After 26 years of organizing and running the Wayland Youth Fishing Derby, I have made the tough choice to step down and not continue organizing the event. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all the supporters and volunteers who have contributed to making this event such a fantastic experience for families and children.

As you know, every single dollar we raised each year was donated to children’s nonprofit organizations. I am proud to have taken over this event from the Kiwanis Club of Wayland and Sudbury when they had to close due to a lack of members. Back then, the Derby was a fun gathering with donuts and ribbons for the kids. Over the years, many local businesses and individuals have helped the Derby ensure that every child received treats and prizes upon arriving at the pond. We also started our famous adult raffle many years ago.

I have looked everywhere for someone else or another group to take over but unfortunately I have had no luck. I will forever cherish the memories of all the special Saturday mornings spent with the families, children and supporters of the Wayland Youth Fishing Derby.
