There’s a famous Seinfeld episode about a “Bizarro World” where everything is the opposite from what it should be.
We are facing “Bizarro Wayland” in how our town is governed right now.
Our famously stringent Planning Board has unanimously endorsed Article 25, which would make economically feasible building an apartment building at 534 Boston Post Road.
This site has an aging industrial building on it today. It is nestled between a Valvoline quick oil change, a paint store, and a car wash on one side and the Sudbury Town Dump on the other. And it is at least half a mile from any existing residence in Wayland.
Building this would result in significant new property tax revenue for Wayland while bringing very few new students into our public schools. It would provide substantial head room in Wayland continuing within the 40B Safe Harbor. And it would be the first major project within our MBTA Zoning Overlay District, showing the Commonwealth that we take that mandate seriously.
The “bizarro” part comes from the opposition to the Article from our Select Board, Finance Committee, and Economic Development Committee.
These are three entities consistently and loudly telling us about our town fiscal crisis and our need for significant “new growth” in our property tax base. Yet they are united in their opposition to Article 25.
Even more bizarro is that the Finance Committee originally voted 7-0 to endorse Article 25. Yet somehow they got caught up in Bizarro Fever and re-voted to oppose it 1-3-2.
Opposition from members of the Select Board and Economic Development Committee seems to be on visual impact on motorists entering the town from Sudbury.
