Richard “Rob” Starr, 74, of Wayland, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2026, just days before his 75th birthday.
Born on May 4, 1951, Rob lived a life defined by love, laughter, and a deep connection to family and friends. He attended Applewild School in Fitchburg, and Tilton School in Tilton, N.H., before graduating from the University of Vermont with a degree in Agriculture.
Rob co-founded The Potting Shed, makers of Dedham Pottery, alongside his mother, Charlotte Allen (“Chotsie”), and his brother, Christopher Starr. The company became beloved for its iconic blue-and-white bunny pattern, and Rob later served as President until his retirement.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Rob is survived by his wife, Heather Starr; his children, Madeline, Riley, and Tess Starr; his granddaughter, Sterling; his uncle, Robert McElwain; and many cousins, in-laws, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved brother, Frederick “Bid” Starr.
Known for his warm smile, quick wit, and playful spirit, Rob had a remarkable ability to make others feel welcome. Affectionately dubbed “Peter Pan” by his mother-in-law, he never lost his sense of wonder, humor, or joy. His kindness and contagious enthusiasm will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.
A celebration of Rob’s life will be held on June 21, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Houghton Memorial Chapel, Wellesley College.
