Colonial Sudbury, the Rice Family, and Their Role in the American Revolution

In 1780 the colonial town of Sudbury broke up into two towns, Sudbury and East Sudbury (later renamed Wayland). That split is usually attributed to the travel barrier posed by the Sudbury River, but in truth that was not the only, or even most important, reason. It was no coincidence that the split happened in the middle of the Revolutionary War, after 142 years of unity.
