Joseph McGill Jr. has spent more than a decade sleeping in the slave dwellings that still stand across America, in the cabins and quarters and cellars where enslaved people lived, worked, and died. His book “Sleeping with the Ancestors: How I Followed the Footprints of Slavery” is the story of that practice: what he found, what it demanded of him, and what it asks of all of us.
