Mail carriers notice missing, scattered mail

Wayland mail carriers have noted suspicious activity on a few mail routes. According to one mail carrier, a resident reported to him that the envelope she had placed in her mailbox had disappeared, but the carrier said he had never seen it. Two days later, he noticed mail strewn on the ground up and down the street and other envelopes in disarray inside some mailboxes. Shortly after that, other carriers noted the same pattern, according to the postmaster.

He said the carriers noted suspicious activity in areas where mailboxes are located along the road, at a distance from the house, away from surveillance cameras.

Wayland police are currently investigating. The postmaster advises anyone who observes suspicious activity to notify the police or leave a note for your local mail carrier in your mailbox. If you have a Ring doorbell that could have recorded the incident, bring your footage to the police.

Mail tampering is a federal crime per 18 U.S.C. §1708, which prohibits the theft, destruction, or unlawful possession of mail.
